Tech Tip 19 - Caught Speeding ?

2nd August, 2002 - Road Angel - It's a VERY big piece of kit to fit on the dash compared to the Orig Bluei or Geodesey and all basically do the same thing although, unlike the Orig, will warn about every Gatso etc site, irrespective of your speed which will be a pain. I like my Origin as it can be set to only warn if you're exceeding the posted limit, travelling in the right direction etc. (I think the Geodesey now has this although still pretty basic) DB

11.3.01 - I got caught (vascar) on the 3rd of Feb, the summons didn't arrive until the 8th March, and my court date is the 11th April. So, just over 8 weeks from date of offence to court appearance in my case. Pleased to hear that a driving ban needn't be an insurance issue Dave. However, I got 8 points for driving without due care (CD10) some time ago, and Peart applied a 25% loading...suppose this is a different kettle of fish to a speeding offence though. Surely any company that insures Porsche's will be aware that those they are insuring are going to exceed the speed-limit every now and again, and this fact doesn't necessarily mean that the person concerned is a higher insurance risk - Mark R

11.3.01 - an old (expired) offence when I was banned for 3 weeks after being clocked doing 105 ish on a motorway (actually I'd just backed off from 145 after my wife had noticed/woken-up!) I was cautioned at the time, received the summons a few weeks later & appeared before the bench a couple of months after that.
More recently, this one was a Gatso fixed penalty notice (WHICH MUST BE ISSUED WITHIN 14 DAYS OF THE ALLEDGED OFFENCE) of, I think, £60 and 3 points. All it said was that they had photographic evidence to prove I was exceeding the temporary speed limit. They don't necessarily have to state a specific speed. I think that apart from "serious" offences, all endorsements are valid for 3 yrs but remain for 4 yrs.
If you EVER receive a Gatso fixed penalty notice after 14 days of the offence; you can AND SHOULD politely return it explaining that it had been issued after this period and they will cancel it !!!!!!!! - Dave B

11.3.01 - I wonder if any other forces do the same as S. Yorks? They reveal the site of their MOBILE speed cameras 1 week in advance! If you travel in or around South Yorkshire then its worth a visit. These are of course traps in urban area so you are a bit of an arse if you speed there anyway. http://www.southyorks.police.uk/traffic/special-traffic4.html - Chewitt
