944 Tech. Tip 20 - Rear Windscreen Wiper

My rear windscreen wiper motor recently went kaput (it would sweep down, but could not return, and made a nasty noise as the motor mis-stepped), and the guru (Charles Marsland) from Auto2000 (Porsche specialist in Kempston, Bedford) informed me that the gears inside are plastic, and not repairable. The only remedy is to replace the unit. I got a second hand one for 15 pounds from an autojumble in Husbourne Crawley. Sorted - Neil M - 22nd June, 2000

Driving along, switched on the rear wiper ~ Swish, swish, swish, swish, clunk. Looked out of side mirror to see the wiper flailing uselessly off the side of the car. Once I turned the wiper off, I found I could move the wiper back onto the screen with hardly any resistance. Haven't dared switch it on again.

It happens to me about three times a year ~ There is a nut which secures the wiper to the spindle, which comes loose. On the base of the wiper arm, remove the cover and tighten this nut (once you have moved the wiper back to the upright position). Simple. Less then 2 min job. I just keep an eye on it, and re-tighten it where necessary. Regards, Will, 944S

Take off the arm completely and clean the splines on the spindle and inside the hole on the wiper arm before reassembling and tightening the nut - then you won't be redoing the job next time it rains ;) BTDT ~ Jim.

I don't think there's any kind of limiter in the wiper assembly - just a device for turning the circular motion of the motor into the back and forth motion of the shaft. The trick is to ensure the splines (on the wiper arm) are free of the build-up of softer material from the shaft. Nip the nut up with its locking washer and all will be well. Nick F
