944 Loose Wing Mirror
Just to let you know that the cause of my loose wing mirror has been identified, just in case others find there is either looseness/play in their wing mirrors or like me a sudden letting go completely; check the bottom washer in the stem of the mirror. There is a split nylon washer and by the looks of it seems to have stretched or worn over the past fifteen years to the point of releasing itself from a bolt and spring assembly in the stem. Two things about this really: 1 The spring is so taut that I think even the dreaded clock bulb replacement would pale in comparison to reassembling the bolt springs and washers - so not a nice job. 2 To remove the cables to the wing mirror motor you need a special tool, so special that my OPC broke one and does not have another, and the local auto electrician has never even owned one! The result being that you may need to cut the wires to the motor and then solder them together again - so a right pig of a job requiring a bit of bodging.
