944 Intermittent Windows
15th July, 2000 - I had a similar problem with my drivers window some time ago. The only way I could get the window to work was by wiggling the switch between the up and down position (that's a technical Porsche viggle!). The window would then always burst into life. I ended up taking the motor out and cleaning the commutator and it was then OK after that, so I put it down to a dead spot on the commutator. I suppose in theory the motor would always stop exactly the same position closed or open, hence the reason for the reoccurring fault. I have to say that it was rather a tricky and awkward job getting the motor out and even more tricky getting it apart. May be best to go for a new motor perhaps if the symptoms are the same as mine were. All the best, Gordon B
17th July, 2001 - I've
got the door lining off, I take it that is the easy bit. The motor looks as
if its held in by 3 bolts Does it come away from the window mechanism or do
I need to take out the motor and the mechanism in one go? Are there any limit
switches to watch for or are they in the motor. Are the motors handed? German
and Swedish advertise motors at £69 if I need one.
If I remember rightly, the whole mechanism had to come
out to get the motor off the gearbox. I remember driving around with the door
window glass propped up with the exact size of 2 X 1 batton for a little while
so that I could work on the motor problem. As regards any limit switches, as
far as I am aware, there are none, as the system relies on a current limiting
choke for the limits of the operation. Hence the reason it will still try to
drive when the window is shut, albeit at a reduced current.
There is no relay in the circuit to my knowledge, and you just need to disconnect
the wires from the motor, (obviously marking them up clearly beforehand). The
only adjustment that needs to be checked is the position of the winding mechanism
on reassembly to the door panel as some of the holes are elongated to ensure
the glass lines up correctly. All the best, Gordon B
18th July, 2001 - I've
now got the motor out! I undid the 2 Allen headed type bolts, they're not Allen
bolts but one of these new fangled fixings that needs a special shaped blade.
Anyway I was able to take the motor out without disturbing all the window mechanism.I
hope it goes back as easily!
Next step what to do with the motor. One end is completely sealed apart from
two small plastic caps which lead nowhere. The other end has a white plastic
end plate which appears to have the terminal socket integral, the commutator/worm
shaft emerges through this. Probably this whole plastic end shield pinges out
with the treminals attached. The only thing is that the plastic end shield has
some soldered joints protuding through it and it looks as if these would stop
the end shield coming off. The thing is that probably
a clean up of the armature and a new set of brushes costing a couple of pounds
would sort the thing. Its a Bosch motor overstamped 'Brose' - Eddie B
20th July, 2001 - For those interested I have now got the window working properly and all it cost was about 3 hours work. Having spoken to various electrical factors and Bosch with the serial number it seems problematical to open the motor and repair it. Nobody seemed confident about supplying suitable brushes. The motor has a rubber seal on the shaft to prevent the grease on the worm gear entering the electrics. This wasn't doing a good job so I flushed out the electrics with some contact cleaner and that seemed to do the trick. The most difficult bit is reassembling the speaker assembly/arm rest. Its really fiddly and would be much easier with the car upside down! EDDIE B
