944 - Juddering Windscreen Wipers
16th October, 2001 - The other thing you can try is to see in which direction of sweep the wipers judder. If it's one direction only, it could be that the angle of attack of the blade to glass is too severe. If this is the case, twist the wiper arm gently (hold the blade at 90 degrees to it and twist) to reduce the angle. The effect should be that the rubber folds "backwards" on each part of the sweep - Nick F

The problem is a build up of traffic film on the screen. This causes the blades
to snag slightly and produce the juddering. If after a long drive in the rain
the problem goes away then this is almost certainly the cause.
My first suggestion would be to clean the windscreen with methylated spirit
polish it on polish it off to remove the road film. After you've done this you
could try applying something like RainX. Another thing you can do is GENTLY
bend the wiper arms (not the blades) themselves towards the screen a little
so that the spring that keeps them on the screen is under a little bit more
tension. Don't go too far with this and try not to crack off the paint finish
on the arms - Steve C
14th October, 2001 - I may be way off the mark here but I solved severe wiper judder a while back by realising that new blades should be fitted with the non-captive end of the rubber at the outside of the arc. In other words, with wipers at top dead centre, the un-clamped end is at the top. Mike B
