Castle Combe by Pete Crosthwaite
Castle Combe, 2 miles very very flat, flatter that Silverstone, surprisingly
fast, 125 MPH down the straight (through Folly), is very easy. No garages, so
everything has to be stored in the open, or if lucky in the room at the back
of the cafe. Good spectator circuit, can walk all around circuit on banking.
Ann even saw me spin at the Bobbies chicane from the skid pan area (Old Paddock
Bend). Overtaking is on the RIGHT. OK, a normal day usually runs at a max of
6 cars on track, PCGB will have a queuing system, 3 x lanes, join the lane from
which you left. Access onto the track was altered this year, you now have to
drive alongside the track for a short distance before joining the track proper
at Folly. But, you are now onto the fastest part of the circuit, first right
kink can be taken flat out, You are arriving at a left kink (Avon Rise), followed
by the daunting right (Quarry). Braking for these two turns is the problem,
the track here is bumpy. Try a gentle brake before the left kink, then a harder
brake for the right turn. Apply full go pedal for the run to the first chicane
(Esses), usual chicane style, slow in fast out. run to the exit kerb, but at
the next right (Old Paddock Bend), dont, dont, dont use the full width of the
track, just go to aprox the middle of the track and power through here, clipping
the outer exit kerb, keep full go pedal for the fast run down to the next right
(Tower), this includes the go pedal pressed to the floor through the intervening
left kink (Hammerdown). The corner approaching you (Tower) is the most horrific
to look at, the tyre wall appears to come right into your face. Turn right,
a quick squirt, brake for the Bobbies Chicane (I can remember that one). Again,
get all your braking done in a straight line, slow in, fast out, watch out for
the bump between the right and left parts of this section. GO GO GO, keep accelerating
through the right kink (Westway), brake for the next right (Camp) that leads
onto the fast section. The track here is deceptively wide, this turn can be
taken much faster that may at first appear, and it incorporates the starting
grid, so it is very wide. Now its full power well into three figures, and around
you go again. The exit from the track is after the right kink (Westway), past
Bobbies, and is on the LEFT, hence the overtake on the RIGHT rule.
